ANALYSIS: Anatomy of a Lost Party, from Republicans to Trumpists
Voters identifying as Republicans are faced with an existential choice - reclaim the party's soul or surrender to Trump's MAGA.
Quick history lesson. America wasn't founded on today's two political parties. In fact, George Washington wouldn't recognize what America has devolved into.
More importantly, the founders never envisioned a scenario where the executive branch would act unchecked without any real pushback from the legislative and judicial branches.
Yet here we are in 2026.
In the decade since Republicans chose Donald Trump as the party's standard bearer, they've transformed into a GOP that is unrecognizable from previous generations.
The party of fiscal responsibility? No longer. We're on a faster track to national bankruptcy than ever before.
The party of values, justice and morality? Well…Trump's link to Epstein is just the tip of a giant iceberg that includes a highly compromised Justice Department.
The party of the people over coastal elites? The only people benefiting from this new economy are the billionaire class. Even MAGA zealots are starting to figure out that Trump only cares for those who provide a tangible financial benefit to his family, his allies, or him personally.
Unless you're a Republican who only cares about power and winning elections at any cost, you face a conundrum: What to do when your party has abandoned you?
I've got a 7-step program for you. Free of charge!
-
(Disclaimer: I've never been registered for either party and have voted for both tickets. They used to call us moderates.)
Step 1 - It's Not Hopeless.
Okay, you're a Republican who feels like a jilted lover. Like any relationship, does it make sense to stay in the relationship? I think you know the answer.
Step 2 - The Change is You.
It's really quite simple. Your vote is your leverage. Withhold it from Trump and Trump enablers in ALL elections henceforth. We’re seeing a lot of this already in various elections in 2026. The midterms are the next great opportunity. Whether you vote for a Democrat or not is totally up to you. But don't use compromised Republicans as a default - they don't deserve it.
Step 3 - Reclaim History
Were there things you liked in Republicans such as Reagan, the Bushes, McCain, etc.? Say so loudly! There's always a new generation of people who are coming up the pipeline as future elected officials. If they're not already infected by Trumpism, remind them of this history. Remind them that true war heroes who won conflicts that literally saved the United States’ very existence (Lincoln and Eisenhower) were Republicans.
Step 4 - Think Out Of The Box
If you're feeling adventurous, do your own research of current political trends. Alarmed by the term democratic socialist? Find out for yourself what figures like Mamdani and AOC are really advocating. You'll not agree with everything, but it will make you think. If we are truly on the road to national bankruptcy, wouldn't it be better to put money toward things that uplift all people (healthcare, food and home security, safety, etc.) rather than primarily making the rich richer, more powerful, and less regulated? Food for thought.
Step 5 - Be Courageous
This may be the toughest step, which is to courageously speak out against what is wrong with today's Republican party. Folks like Massie, Carlson and MTG are still few in number. Party leaders are too scared, too indebted or too cowardly to speak out against Trump and this administration. Don't rely on a top-down reckoning. This will have to come from regular everyday Republicans who want a return to normalcy. Because what we are now seeing every day is not normal. If this becomes normalized, then I mourn for the future of our nation.
Step 6 - Be Informed
The GOP has benefited greatly from what passes for mass media consumption these days. Legacy media is driven by profit and influence more than ever before. It's not about facts anymore; it's about alternative facts. In other words, the right narrative that drives the overall agenda - actual facts be damned. Thankfully, independent media is stepping into the breach. Folks like the MeidasTouch Network, Aaron Parnas and Katie Phang are bringing it every day with receipts. They report on the things that Fox News and even CNN don't want to touch or acknowledge. Knowing what is truly going on, without relying on false narratives in echo chambers, is a huge step in returning to normalcy.
Step 7 - Be Kind
Trump introduced a new ethos that views compassion and kindness as a weakness. Highly ironic, since the Judeo-Christian tradition actually highlights those behaviors as something God wants us to be. This distortion is creating a new generation of young Republicans who accept this as the gospel. The remedy? Model that compassion and kindness yourself. George W. Bush once modeled compassionate conservativism, and his father talked about a thousand points of light. It's not impossible to get back to where the Grand Old Party truly belongs.
And let's be real for a second. Poll after poll shows Trump with an approval rating that translates into support from just 3 or 4 of 10 American voters. I'm bad at math, but that looks to me like 30 to 40 percent. Those numbers don't win elections, which is why Republicans are going nuts about supposed election integrity. That's the red herring. What truly terrifies them are the numbers I mentioned.
Without changing course, the GOP will be dependent on “true MAGA” to win future elections. Which is not nearly enough. True MAGA is loud (hello Steve Bannon) but it's not the majority of Americans, especially after Trump showed his true colors in his second term. He has shown that it's all about him and nothing else.
And without changing course, Republicans will need to brush up on their history from nearly a century ago. Starting in 1932 until Eisenhower’s election in 1952, the GOP were the party in the wilderness.
Today's GOP will be lucky if it's just 20 years this time around. It's a party on the precipice. The mainstream Republicans I'm addressing now will have to decide if it's worth saving.
